Gretchen C. Daily
Associate Professor (Research) in the Department of Biological Sciences, and Senior Fellow at the Institute for International Studies at Stanford University "New Frontiers in Conservation" Thursday, January 16, 2003, 12:00 noon University Center, second floor
Gretchen Daily's primary scientific focus concerns the future course of extinction, the resulting changes in the delivery of ecosystem services, and novel opportunities for biodiversity conservation. She is developing a methodology for using changes in land cover to forecast changes in biodiversity and certain ecosystem services based on field sampling (in Costa Rica and Mexico), remote sensing, and theoretical modeling.
Dr. Daily is Associate Professor (Research) in the Department of Biological Sciences, and Senior Fellow at the Institute for International Studies at Stanford. She was named a Pew Fellow in Conservation and the Environment (1994), and is a recipient of the 21st Century Scientist Award (2000) among other honors. She has served on a subcommittee of the Presidential Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology (1997-98) and on numerous other panels and committees for the United Nations, the World Bank, private foundations, and scientific institutions.
She has published over 100 scientific and popular articles. An ecologist by training, Professor Daily is working to develop a scientific basis, and political and institutional support, for managing Earthıs life support systems. Her efforts span basic science, environmental policy analysis, teaching, and public education.
