Marsh Distinguished Lecture Series - April 2000Jesse Ausubel
Director, Program for Human Development Abstract: Everything that happens or will happen is born in seeds planted in the remote past, and these seeds develop themselves in macroscopic events following the constant laws of a social DNA. I foresee future developments, driven by science and technology, in food, energy, transport, information, and other sectors. The main themes of the Rockefeller research program are industrial ecology (the study of the network of all industrial processes as they may interact with each other and live off each other, a field Mr. Ausubel helped originate) and the long-term interactions of technology and the environment. Underlying the work are ongoing studies of the mathematics of growth and diffusion. Educated at Harvard and Columbia universities, Mr. Ausubel serves on several editorial boards, including The Journal of Industrial Ecology. He is a University Fellow of Resources for the Future and an adjunct faculty member of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, where he has conducted ongoing studies since 1991. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a director of the Martha's Vineyard Conservation Society. |
