Institute for Energy and Sustainability (IES)
The Institute formally launched in the Spring of 2009 through partnerships with Clark University, WPI and Congressman Jim McGovern's office. Clark University and WPI bring substantial capabilities to the Institute, notably through their internationally recognized research programs, their eclectic pool of professors, students and faculty, and the depth of their management experience.
The Institute is led by a 15 member steering committee, representing a cross section of the community's best and brightest minds. Members from Congressman McGovern's office, Lt. Governor Murray's office, the city manager's office, the Central Mass Regional Employment Board, Conover and Company Communications, Bowditch and Dewey, Worcester Community Action Council, Quinsigamond Community College, Clark University, and WPI are represented and they have all rallied around the mission of the Institute and pledged the support of their respective offices and organizations.
In November 2009, Steering Committee member and Partner at Bowditch & Dewey, LLP, Vincent DeVito began serving as the IES' first Executive Director. As former Assistant Secretary for the Department of Energy, Vincent brings experience and specialized renewable energy market and enterprise expertise to the leadership position.
Initial funding is from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center, and the Institute is using that support to begin engaging the community at-large in our mission. With our partners, IES is working to transform the industrial corridors of Central Massachusetts into a green energy zone that includes research, development, deployment, and an economic development focus towards being a working example and active contributor to sustainability solutions.
