HALYARD CLOTHING

matt arnold“We’re making it up as we go along, but we’re having a really good time with it and a lot of fun.” To Matt Arnold, a Clark senior and one of the founders of Halyard Clothing, having the chance to do something different everyday and having fun with it, is his motivation for getting his business started along with the assistant coach of his lacrosse team, Clark MBA student, Scott Foglietta.

Halyard is a nautical term for a rope that is used for raising or lowering a sail or flag, and it reflects the style Arnold is trying to create with his clothing line. He describes Halyard as an island lifestyle company which will sell t-shirts and polos with a variety of logos, with hopes of branching out into bathing suits and other clothing in the near future. The clothing line is geared towards an island audience: Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Cape Cod, and the British Virgin Islands. Arnold, a Brookline, Mass. native, compares it with the venerable island store Vineyard Vines, and thinks it would be great to one day have their own island store to sell Halyard Clothing.

Arnold, a Management major and International Relations minor, is also a member of Initial Advantage (IA), the Clark student entrepreneurial club, and credits the group with playing a large role in helping get the company started. “They are a brilliant group of people. We bounce ideas off of each other all day long,” said Arnold.

He will be working with another Clark student business, Interactive Purchasing Solutions (IPS), to create the first pieces of clothing that the company will be selling. When asked about what else played a significant role in the creation of his company, he added that just having that general drive you find in entrepreneurs has been essential to turn the idea he had one year ago into the business he is now launching.

Arnold has a very positive and excited attitude about his entrepreneurial endeavor. He thinks college is the perfect time to start something up, and that even if his first try falls short, it has been a great experience and he definitely has learned a lot from it.
