John

Chemistry, physics and calculus comprised the majority of John Kuchta’s freshman year schedule at Clark. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to study, and was thinking of heading in the direction of science. But as he got involved more in film and video work, he discovered his true passion. Now a senior Screen Studies major, Kuchta, along with four other current and former Clark students, run the independent film studio Played Films, and are poised to make their mark on the world of film.

Between the five members of Played Films, Nugget Nugent, Glenn Teel, Dan Bowhers, Jonah Lefkowitz, and Kuchta, the studio has created television shows that have appeared on the Clark Cable Network, documentaries and both short and feature films. The group offer talents and experience in screenwriting, editing, directing, sound, lighting, set design and publicity, and have done hired and original work

Currently, Kuchta is working closely with another Played member, Glenn Teel, on finishing his first feature film, Fifth Year Free, which he wrote and will direct and edit. He said it is an accessible story about the tensions between a college campus and its neighbors, and will be filmed on Clark’s campus using Clark students (although it will be a nameless, New England college in the film). He plans on using it as a showcase for his work and submitting it to film festivals.

Kuchta and the other members of Played Films all have a strong film theory background from their Clark courses. Although Clark does not have a widely recognized film program, he said this has given them the initiative to do more, and they receive a lot of positive encouragement. Their Clark studies have given them a similar ideal and feeling towards the quality of film work they do. “We can look at mainstream media and see what works, why it works and what we can do better. We want to raise the bar of American mainstream media. It needs to be re-energized.”
