INITIAL ADVANTAGE

VickeyA well-rounded college education should take place both inside and outside the classroom and nowhere is that seen better than through the Clark student entrepreneurial group, Initial Advantage. Jane Kaplan, Clark '07 and a Management major, joined the group in its first year, and was a key member and leader as the group has evolved from being a forum to share ideas into a support network for student entrepreneurs and an avenue for students to receive more entrepreneurial education. Kaplan was critical in IA’s newest endeavor to become a non-profit organization. She and the members of IA believe achieving a 501C3 non-profit status will allow the group to secure more money through donations and fund raising, which they then hope to use to provide a greater source of financial support for budding student businesses, as well as to expand the programming they offer to educate students about entrepreneurship.

Kaplan, who grew up outside of Philadelphia, understood that this latest venture was definitely one of the largest challenges the group has faces. IA secured a lawyer who helped with the legal and paperwork process, pro bono. The group also received advice and encouragement from George Gendron and the Entrepreneurs in Residence involved in the I&E program, as well as Dean Ottensmeyer in the Graduate School of Management. However, the rest of the work was done by Kaplan, who now sits on the board of the Initial Advantage.

"IA has really helped me realize what I want to do in life. I love the idea of helping to bring a new business to the forefront. It’s fun to create something.” She is currently enrolled in Clark's MBA program as part of the Accelerated Degree program. She hopes that her future  experiences both at Clark and in the workforce will help her play a significant role in creating something new, as well as to continue to encourage up and coming entrepreneurs to grow their ideas into successful realities.
