| Professor Kushner received a B.A. in history and religion from Dartmouth College in 1990, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1994 and 2005, respectively. She spent some of the intervening years in the Peace Corps in West Africa and working as a tour guide in New York City. She taught at the College of Charleston for several years before coming to Clark in 2005.
Current Research and TeachingProfessor Kushner specializes in eighteenth-century French social and cultural history, with an emphasis on women and sexuality. Her teaching repertoire includes courses on the history of early modern Europe, the national histories of France and England, the history of women, and the history of sexuality.Currently, she is revising her dissertation, "Unkept Women: Elite Prostitution in Eighteenth-Century Paris, 1747-1771," into a manuscript for publication. Using police records and other archival evidence, as well contemporary commentaries, Professor Kushner's research tries to reconstruct the world of elite mistresses and elite sexuality in Enlightenment France. She is also working on a volume of essays about women and work in the early modern period.
