High Honors for
HERO
Clark awards "highest honors" to its
graduating seniors rarely. This year, the HERO program has three graduating
seniors among the University's highest achievers.
HERO Program in the Spotlight
The Scarlet, Clark's Undergraduate Student Newspaper, Writes about HERO in
its "Year in Review" Issue
The article, titled "Stellar Students Become HEROs," was
written by Scott Berghegger, the opinions editor for The Scarlet. Published on
May 1, 2006, the article outlines the HERO program, reviews some of the current
research underway, and notes the growing number of applicants to the HERO
program.

HERO Class of 2006-2007 Selected
Clark University HERO Students and Faculty are Well
Represented and Recognized at the Annual Meeting of Association of American
Geographers
Assefa, Sarah, Laura Merner, Kate del Vecchio, and
Isaac Payano (HERO/NSF REU-Polsky). 2006. Best student poster from the
Water Resources Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers
undergraduate poster competition. Poster title: "Rapid Assessment of
Vulnerability to Drought in the Ipswich River Watershed, MA."
Connors, John (HERO-Pontius). 2006. Second place in
the Remote Sensing Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers in
the Student Illustrated Paper Competition (all other awards to doctoral
students). Paper title: "Quantifying Categorical Associations using Sub-pixel
Mapping."
Frazier, Ryan (HERO-Rogan). 2006. Presented a paper
for the Remote Sensing Specialty Group in the Student Illustrated Paper
Competition titled: "Creating a Historical Database for Land Cover Change
Detection."
Hill, Troy (HERO-Polsky). 2006. Best student paper
from the Water Resources Specialty Group of the Association of American
Geographers undergraduate paper competition. Paper title: "Adaptation to Climate
Variability in Central Massachusetts: A Focus on Structure and Agency."
Jones, Trevor (HERO-Rogan). 2006. Presented a paper
for the Remote Sensing Specialty Group in the Student Illustrated Paper
Competition titled: "Land-Cover Mapping in the New York State Adirondack Park
Utilizing Landsat (E)TM+ Data an Environmental GIS Variables as Input in a
Classification Tree Algorithm."
Lippitt, Christopher (HERO-Rogan & Clark Labs).
2006. Best student paper from the Geographic Information and Science and Systems
Specialty Group Honors Competition. Paper title: "A Framework for Modeling
Invasive Species Risk."
Polsky, Colin (Assistant Professor at Clark
University and HERO Faculty. Sponsor). 2006. Presented: "Towards a Meta-Analysis
of Global Change Vulnerability."
Pontius, Gil (Associate Professor at Clark
University and HERO Faculty Sponsor). 2006. Paper presentation: "Quantitative
Assessment for a Model of Amazonian Deforestation."
Graduate School Successes: HERO Students Gain Entrance to Top Graduate Programs
Connors, John (HERO-Pontius) will be attending Clark
University next year in the 5th year master's program in GIS.
Frazier, Ryan (HERO-Rogan) will be attending Clark
University next year in the 5th year master's program in GIS.
Hill, Troy (HERO-Polsky) has accepted admission into
the master's program in Environmental Science at the Yale School of Forestry and
Environmental Studies. Hill was also admitted to a master's program in Climate
and Society at Columbia University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
Jones, Trevor (HERO-Rogan) admitted into the
master's program in Forestry at the University of British Columbia, Forest
Resources Management Department.
Lippitt, Christopher (HERO-Rogan) admitted to
doctoral programs in Geography at the University of South Carolina, Boston
University, and a joint program between San Diego State University and the
University of California at Santa Barbara.
