The Graduate School of Geography is renowned for its contributions to geographic research. Undergraduates, graduates and faculty work both individually and collaboratively to expand the frontiers of geographic knowledge. Office, study, and research areas include three earth science and geographic information systems (GIS) laboratories, a soils lab, the Hadwen Herbarium and the Map and Aerial Photograph Library. The Graduate School of Geography and the Marsh Institute sponsor several venues that allow for the internal and external dissemination of geographic news and knowledge. |

Guy H. Burnham
Map and Aerial Photograph Library
Founded
in 1921, the Guy H. Burnham Map and Aerial Photograph Library is an
active cartographic information center. The collection contains 230,000
maps, imagery, digital data, GIS and mapping software, atlases,
journals, globes, reference materials, and tourist information. As a
depository for the U.S. Government Printing Office, the Map Library
houses a full array of maps and electronic products published by the

J. K.
Wright Reading Room
The J.K. Wright Reading Room and the Libbey Seminar Room contain regularly
updated publications in the field of geography and subscriptions to
geography journals. These black serve as a reserve library/reading
room for many geography courses.
CoFERT
The Computer Facility for Environmental Research and Teaching (CoFERT) is a facility created by gifts from the Culpeper and Keck Foundations. It
supports research in Geography and the Marsh Institute requiring large data sets and advanced
computer-based analyses. The lab has a Windows NT server capable of
handling a large number of clients. Additional hardware includes Pentium
NT workstations and other data input and output peripherals, such as a
large format color printer, a flatbed scanner, slide scanner,
CD-writers, and large format digitizers.
Geography
Computer Lab
The
Geography Computer Lab is primarily a teaching lab for such courses as
GIS, automated cartography, statistics, and physical geography. The lab
has 12 Windows NT workstations and full access over the network to
specialized computer equipment in the CoFERT Lab. Software supported
includes Idrisi, ArcView, ArcInfo, ERDAS, Delphi, and a variety of
products for numerical and statistical analysis.
George Perkins Marsh Institute
The
George Perkins Marsh
Institute (GPMI) is an association of research centers concerned
with human-environmental relations and their implication for social,
cultural, and economic development. In addition to housing the
Jeanne X. Kasperson Research Library, the GPMI facilitates the interdisciplinary
work of the following three research centers:
CENTED
The
Center for Technology, Environment, and Development (CENTED), is
internationally recognized for its work on environmental risk and
hazards, is home to the Greening of Industry Network, and examines land
use/land cover change and the human dimensions of global change.
Clark
Labs
Clark
Labs
is a nonprofit research project dedicated to the development of
analytical tools for use in geographical research. The IDRISI and
CartaLinx software programs are products of Clark Labs with over 25,000
registered users worldwide. Clark Labs maintains International Resource
Centers at an increasing number of universities outside the United
States, including the UK, Switzerland, Austria, Poland, Hungry, Russia,
China, and Costa Rica. IRC's support Clark Labs products and participate
in collaborative research directed towards software development and
education.
Center for Community-Based Development (CCBD)
The
CCBD addresses participatory and
gender themes in development, and is associated with both the Graduate
School of Geography and the Clark Program for International Development
and Social Change. It has a long-established history of research in
association with a variety of international development agencies such as
USAID.
