Professor Robert Kates helped to pioneer research and international programs of study on natural hazards, food security, sustainability science associated with such landmark works as Environment as Hazard (with others), The Earth as Transformed by Human Action (with others), and co-chaired the National Academy of Sciences report Our Common Journey: A Transition toward Sustainability. Kates was the first Clark geographer elected to the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of arts and Sciences, and was awarded the Presendent's Medal of Science. Robert Kates remains highly active in international endeavors dealing with sustainability science, and serves as editor of Environment. |
