Se Fue la Luz
Rebecca Alper
(Class of 2006) knows what it's like to work, study, and engage in outreach in
difficult settings, going all the way back to high school when she spent the
summer in an isolated part of the Dominican Republic (DR) where electricity came
off and on in a somewhat random manner. [No, “se fue la luz” is not Spanish for
Clark’s Fiat Lux (Let there be light.) It translates: “there was light”.] A
Geography and International Development double major, Becky went back to the DR
teach English in the Spring of 2005. Her foreign field experience, fluency in
Spanish, and expertise in GISc won her a Fulbright Fellowship to Spain
for the 2006-07 academic year, after which Becky will return to Clark for an
Accelerated MA in GISc.
 With friends in the DR.

Becky was
awarded a Presidential Scholarship for academic achievement to attend
Clark. Her studies and outreach activities have led to her selection as a
HERO Fellow (2004), election to the Gryphon Pleiades Honor Society
(2005) and to the Fiat Lux Honor Society (2005), and award of the
Strabo Prize in Geography (2005).
