Key Features of the M.A.T. Program

The teacher preparation program is defined and structured in light of the partnership goal to bring school and University expertise synergistically together. Program features include:

  • The integration of arts and sciences and education faculty and school-based mentor teachers on K-16 curriculum and instructional teams in the core academic disciplines
  • The placement of students in learning teams in partner schools, with a full-time teacher-leader providing school-based support in each school
  • Team-taught courses and seminars that are in whole or part school-based
  • A full academic year internship (clinical experience)
  • Classroom-based "rounds" in which University faculty and students and mentor teachers share and reflect together on teaching and learning in actual context
  • An emphasis on equitable practice that supports all students in developmentally appropriate and rigorous learning and
  • Performance and portfolio assessment

The program socializes students into a professional culture formed from a commitment to develop expertise through collaboration, inquiry and reflection and to ensure and enable learning for all students. Approximately 40 students complete the program each year. More information
