The Schiltkamp Gallery is delighted to announce the opening of "Reverie", an exhibition featuring the work of Sandy Litchfield, Randy Gilmore, and Nick Zagar. These three artists explore the overlap of memory and imagination - as if giving life to vivid dreams. They create fantastical realms filled with vast panoramas, wild beasts, and glittering mountains.

In dreams, we experience a suspended reality - where space and time shift and overlap, where human and animal elements intermingle. Yet within this realm, it all makes sense. Each artist in this exhibit creates an amalgam of creatures and environments that hover just below consciousness. In "Reverie," we have the chance to discover these bizarre and beautiful worlds where anything seems possible.

PlayTime

The work of artists is largely seen as a fait accompli; finished, polished products presented for public consumption. However, far less attention has been paid to the staging ground where artists freely "mess around" with their familiar tools and materials. During this period of curious exploration, great artistic discoveries are made. Creative play is at the core of all artistic endeavors and is the source from which many artists ultimately find their unique style and voice.

Within PlayTime you will find items created by artists during their own process of creative play as well as items designed to ask you, the viewer, to consider the psychology and significance of playfulness. You will also find three installations by artists inviting personal exploration through interactive participation. These participatory projects have additional importance for their community building aspects, allowing us to realize the creative process can be more than a solo venture.

Visual Dialogues

The various works of art on display in the gallery and to be performed on campus April 3 and 4 are not necessarily pretty pictures. Many of these images and performance pieces are difficult: to look at, to understand, or to think about. Several artists invite viewers to collaborate and actively engage in the work. This, too, may be difficult if one is more comfortable thinking of art as essentially ornamental and passive. Some of these pieces are intimate and deeply personal, other projects tackle giant global issues, while others directly reflect the desires and fears of the participants. The art may also evoke changing responses over time. Some narratives will be very immediate, others more subtle. Yet, all of these artists passionately express "the conditions of human life" and employ art as a powerful "means of intercourse".

The Human Tapestry

One set, entitled Body/DNA, combines varied representations of DNA with paint impressions of the human form in an exploration of the past and future. The other collection, Danse Ardente, fuses cellular imagery with paint impressions of the body in motion in a celebratory project of duality and paradox.

The artist earned her master's degree from Clark University and has taught and exhibited throughout New England as well as around United States.
