The various works of art on display in the gallery and to be performed on campus April 3 and 4 are not necessarily pretty pictures. Many of these images and performance pieces are difficult: to look at, to understand, or to think about. Several artists invite viewers to collaborate and actively engage in the work. This, too, may be difficult if one is more comfortable thinking of art as essentially ornamental and passive. Some of these pieces are intimate and deeply personal, other projects tackle giant global issues, while others directly reflect the desires and fears of the participants. The art may also evoke changing responses over time. Some narratives will be very immediate, others more subtle. Yet, all of these artists passionately express "the conditions of human life" and employ art as a powerful "means of intercourse".
