My work stems from a simple need to continually encounter
things and places that are new and unfamiliar. For me, wandering itself is
a form of catharsis. I carry a camera along with me to capture the beauty
of the things I see as I travel. The images I make depict cityscapes with
high-contrast transitions between pools of light and deep shadows. When I
make these images, I'm always trying to capture the subtle interaction between
light and shadow and the beauty of the tones in the spaces in between. For
instance, the sheen of light on a wet street, the barely visible silhouette
of naked trees against a dark, but cloudy sky, or the rough texture of decaying
brick and mortar. While none of these images depict people (reinforcing the
solitary nature of my experience), I am trying to convey an impression of
humanity through its marked absence. I display these suble images as large
as I can practically do so to immerse the viewer in the space depicted in
them.
