The Chemistry Department offers programs leading to the degrees of master of arts and doctor of philosophy in the fields of bioinorganic, bioorganic, biophysical, inorganic, nuclear, organic, organometallic, physical, and polymer chemistry, and in molecular biology. A variety of graduate courses are taught in the Chemistry Department, and advanced courses in other departments such as Biology, Physics, or Mathematics are available. Graduate students also may elect to take courses at nearby institutions; for example, at Worcester Polytechnic Institute or at the University of Massachusetts Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (both in Worcester).

Applicants must provide the following:
- Completed Application Form, plus Application fee of $50.00.
- Transcripts from all prior post-secondary schools attended.
- Three letters of recommendation.
- GRE scores, the subject area exam is not required, but is recommended.
- TOEFL score, for non-native English speakers. Score
requirements:
iBT (Internet-based Test) -- Minimum: Reading 15;
Speaking 16; Listening 14; Writing 17, with a
total score of at least 75.
PBT (Paper-based Test) -- Minimum total score 620.
CBT (Computer-bases Test) -- Minimum total score 260.
Ph.D. Requirements
- Qualifying Exams - Students take standardized ACS exams
in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic
Chemistry and Physical Chemistry. Students are required to
pass 4 of the 5 exams before the end of the second semester
following admission.
- Courses - Students must complete a minimum of 5 courses. The courses must be taken from at least three of the four subdivisions: Biochemistry, Inorganic/Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry/Spectroscopy and Physical Chemistry.
- Qualifying Exams II - A written exam concentrating on the student's area of research.
- Preliminary Exam - A written and oral exam. The student generates an original research idea and writes it in the style of a grant proposal.
- Language Exam - Students must demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English.
Teaching Experience:
All graduate students are required to have at least one year of teaching experience.
Dissertation:
An acceptable written dissertation is presented to the department as a seminar and defended orally before the student's committee.
