Dr. Fern Johnson demonstrates how television advertisers use language to reinforce the association of a toy with one or the other gender.

Dr. Timothy Shary knows that as "cultural artifacts," films reveal a lot about the people who view them and the people who make them. In a recent book, he examines in depth how teenagers have been portrayed in youth movies during the years 1980-2001.
