Bermuda Abstract

The core samples retrieved in Bermuda were from the two bays Tobacco Bay, and Whalebone bay. This was done because there was an observed behavioral difference between fish activity towards stirring up the sediment off shore with snorkel fins.   It was observed that at Whalebone Bay there was a significantly larger amount of fish that were attracted to the sediment being disturbed rather than at Tobacco Bay. The fish’s behavior pointed out that there must be more meiofauna or nutrients in the sediment being disturbed.  Therefore from the observations made on fish behavior between the two bays it was expected that there would be a considerably larger amount of Meiofauna in the Sediment at Whalebone Bay rather than Tobacco Bay. This experiment was done by using core sampling methods, meiofaunal extraction methods, and a microscope used to seperate the different species of meiofauna. It was found that the hypothesis was correct. Meiofauna distribution was significantly larger in Whalebone Bay vs. Tobacco Bay.
