This graph shows the number
of mussels found in each quadrate along with the
% barnacle cover of that quadrate. Although the
trend line is slight negative looking it is not
significant. with a p value of (.41)
Nahant Discussion
The data shows
no significant trend in the amount of Mytilus
edulis in relation to the percent barnacles
cover. This is most likely due to not taking
into account the secondary settlement of
mussels, to an adult aggregation. Both adults
and juvenile mussels were counted.
Future
directions would be to conduct an extensive
study on mussel recruitment by clearing
different substrates and observe pre and post
settlement of the mussel community. This would
give an in-depth description of this community
recruitment factors.
Observations
One observation
made was that more exposed east point had
significantly more mussels present, usually
within aggregation form. However the shelter
area had many adult mussels alone. There may be
more grazing in this area and less mussels can
survive, however when they reach a certain age
are able to avoid grazing by snails. Lack of
competition between the aggregations may so be a
factor in surviving in the more sheltered
environment.
