The rocky intertidal area in Nahant, Massachusetts is a harsh living environment.  The rocky intertidal is the area between high and low tides.  There are a multitude of different organisms that live in this zone.  When the tide goes out, the organisms on the rocky substrate have to fight desiccation, or extreme loss of water.  Conversely, when the tide comes in, the organisms living there have to fight from being swept away by the tide and battle the change in both temperature and salinity.  This project is the result of gathering data in Nahant, Massachusetts over the course of the semester where I studied the snails Littorina littorea and Littorina obtusata.  Neither of these snails grows to be more than a couple of centimeters in diameter, but they are dominant herbivores in this intertidal zone.
