Bermuda Biological
Station for Research
1926 marked the beginning of the Bermuda Biological Station for
Research (BBSR), and was established in New York City as a non-profit
organization. In 1932, the BBSR facilities opened in Bermuda just a
stones throw away from the only airport on the island. Research was
conducted in the summer months until after World War II, when it became a
research center year round. Beginning with regular deep sea observations
in 1954, BBSR and "The Bermuda Government established a monitoring program
of Bermuda's inshore waters and marine communities which continues today,"
(BBSR). I chose to sample from BBSR for several reasons. First, the
station was where we were staying while in Bermuda, and I felt it would be
interesting to see what the water quality was that was directly in front
of a marine research institute. Second, there is heavy boat traffic on
the waterway in front of the station, and BBSR has a vessel of its own.
The combination of these two factors allows for there to be a possible
increase in pollution due to the leakage of fuel from the boats.
