Epyphetic pitchers which can absorb moisture and dissolved substances via both roots and leaves.
Flowers have superior ovaries forming capsules and wind-scattered seeds.
The inflorescences usually consist of pink, bright red, or yellow
bracts with protruding yellow or orange flowers, and are usually
flattened on one side.

Vriesea splendens - cross-band pattern on leaves.
Vriesea guttata - patches on leaves and a very large, pink infloresence.
Vriesea tessellata - leaves have a green network pattern.
