Bromeliaceae > Ananas - 5 species

Distribution from Paraguay to Mexico.

According to one source, there are only five species in this genus, but from other sources it looks like there may be more, now.

Some Species:

Ananas comosus (or Ananas savitus) - the pineapple! - inflorescence rises on a short peduncle from a rosette of numerous elongated leaves. flowers surrounded by long pink bracts topped with a green crown. Upon ripening, ovaries fuse wiht lower part of bracts and swell with receptacle to form the flesh of the pineapple.
