Hibiscus genus was named by Carolus Linnaeus 

Some say the name derives from ibis

It was believed that the bird lived off hibiscus plants.  

Many species are found in marshy areas where the ibis thrives.

The hibiscus plant is very well rooted in Chinese culture

 - It is found in many Chinese ornamental gardens

 - It is praised in the poetry of the Song and Ming dynasties

 - Even the old Chinese name for Korea means "land of hibiscus" when translated
