Walk for Haiti: A message from Karleen Porcena '09

March 27, 2010

As a Clark University graduate in May 2009 I left Worcester with both the skills and mindset to “challenge convention and change our world.” I believe that phrase when spoken has the ability to connect Clarkies with both their community and the global community that are all inevitably connected. My time at Clark has no doubt prepared me for being an active member in my community and is the reason for me joining the Urban Walk for Haiti.

As a Haitian-American the images seen on CNN have hit home and have kept us all mesmerized and praying that the worst is behind us. Right now it is action mode, which requires a united force.

I wanted to provide you with a little information about the event and, most importantly, invite you to join me for the Walk in Cambridge on Saturday, March 27th at 12:00pm.

The Seventh Annual Walk for Haiti supports the work of Partners in Health in Haiti. This year the walk is raising money for primary and secondary students at Ecole Bon Sauveur on the Cange medical campus in Haiti. In addition to the three mile walk along the Charles, there will be an afternoon of music, food, and cultural activities.

Clark students, professor collecting vitamins, pain medicine to bring to Haiti

March 01, 2010

Many Clark faculty and students have been closely following the developments in the aftermath of the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti.

International Development, Community and Environment (IDCE) Professor Jude Fernando, along with a small group of students, will travel to Haiti over Spring Break to explore the possibility of setting up long-term partnerships between Haitian NGOs and universities and the Clark community. As hunger and malnutrition spread throughout the country, our contacts have asked us to bring multivitamin supplements for distribution.

Requested items include multivitamins (children’s, adults’ and prenatal) and pain medication (acetaminophen and ibuprofen). Monetary donations will also be accepted and will go toward the relief effort.

Please bring donations to the Higgins University Center Information Desk, 950 Main Street, or to the Escort Desk in the Academic Commons at Goddard Library, by Wednesday, March 3. For more information, contact Clark’s International Development, Community and Environment Department at 508-793-7201.
