Paul E. Phillips, who was recently named Assistant Athletics Director at Clark, will begin his seventh year at the helm of the Cougar women’s and men’s swim and dive program. In 2008, he guided Ryan Garr '12 to a first-place NEWMAC finish in the 200-yard backstroke and qualification for the NCAA Tournament. Garr's All-NEWMAC honors marks the first time for such honors since L. Parker Barunm '04. Garr concluded his first-year with three school records.
Phillips led the 2008 women's swim and dive team to one of its best seasons in program history. The Cougars captured their highest finish in the NEWMAC (5th/281 points) since joining the conference in 1998, posted their third winning record in four years (7-2), and saw its first diver qualify for the NCAA Division III Championships in 10 years. Garcia '12 earned All-America honors after an eigth place finish in the 3-meter baord.
Prior to Clark, Phillips was an accomplished high-school and club team coach. Highlights include a stint at Lincoln High School (R.I.) (1998-2003), where he led the school to its first ever co-ed state title (1999-2000). He directed Lincoln’s girls’ team to three consecutive Rhode Island state championships and the boys’ team to three division championships. The boy’s team ranked first among Rhode Island public high schools four out of five years.
Other successes include the Boys & Girls Club of Cumberland-Lincoln, where Phillips helped the swim team grow to 165 swimmers in just two years and led the Penguins to four straight Rhode Island/Massachusetts League championships. Phillips also developed several Rhode Island state champions, and was named 2002 Rhode Island/Massachusetts League Coach of the Year.
An outstanding competitor, Phillips is the only swimmer to earn All-State honors from North Providence High, where he was a two-year captain and 1991 Rhode Island swimmer-of-the-year nominee. On the collegiate level, Phillips was a school-record holder and team captain at Brandeis University, where he earned a B.A. in philosophy.
Additionally, Phillips designed and supervised the extensive Kneller pool-renovation project completed in the fall of 2004. He also coaches and directs his own “Swim Smart” competitive swimming clinics.
