Cans-A-Plenty: Cougar SAAC Donates 815 lbs. To Local Food Bank
Worcester, Mass. – The Clark University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) once again participated in its “Trick-or-Treat For Canned Goods” event this past Halloween.
The group, which was represented by 13 teams, hung flyers throughout the neighborhoods the week of October 25 and then went and collected the donations on Friday, October 30. After all the donations were collected, Clark had gathered up an astounding 815 pounds of donations from the neighborhoods close to the University’s campus.
Once the goods were separated, several members of the SAAC transported the donations over to the Worcester County Food Bank. There, the Food Bank collects, inspects, and stores the donated food and grocery products and then distributes it through a network of 178 partner agencies to help feed hungry people living in 60 cities and towns in Central Massachusetts.
“The Clark University SAAC provides meaningful support to the WCFB and our network of partner agencies with their annual food drive and volunteer work,” said Lois Maitland Paire, Director of Programs and Operations at the Worcester County Food Bank. “Equally important though, is their commitment to raising awareness about the issue of hunger by engaging the college community and reaching out to the local neighborhoods. We are sure that as college graduates they will continue to have a very positive impact on their communities.”
In the last four years, the University SAAC has donated more than 4,200 pounds of food to the Worcester County Food Bank.

BASEKETBALL CAPTURES 2ND ANNUAL DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT
For the second year, the Intra-Team Support Committee within SAAC hosted the now annual Dodgeball Tournament in November. Committee co-chairs Corri Stewart and Ben Wajda organized over 80 athletes who all gathered in the Kneller Athlete Center to compete - “playground style” - in a single elimination showdown. With championship t-shirts at stake, some teams seemed to easily embrace Patches O’Houlihan’s five D’s of dodgeball: dodge, duck, dip, dive, and dodge their way to the second round of play. When the dust had settled however, Team Baseketball, comprised of baseball and women’s basketball players, showed they were the most able to dodge wrenches and balls as they defeated Team Hakeem for the title.
Stewart said, “I think the Dodgeball Tournament went really well for the second year in a row, everyone had fun and the T-shirts were a hit. Hopefully this can continue as a good time for athletes to relax and all enjoy themselves.” The results of the bracket marked the two year in which baseball players were among those on the winning team. We can all be sure that the tournament next year will bring plenty of stiff competition, all ready to challenge them for the title of Dodgeball Champions.

TRICK-OR-TREATING FOR CANNED GOODS
Once again this past Halloween, SAAC members and their teammates joined together for the annual Trick-or-Treat for canned goods event. In hopes of collecting more cans than ever before, Caleb Evanter ‘09 and David Gagnon ‘09, both co-chairs of the Community Engagement Committee, organized the flyering and collecting of food from houses all around Worcester. When all the collecting and sorting was complete, the group of over 50 volunteers had brought in 1400 pounds of food! This was over 400 more pounds than what had been collected the previous year. All the food was donated to the Worcester City Food Bank, who praised the group for collecting more food than many drives organized by large corporations.
Going out and getting the cans wasn’t where the job ended though, the following Wednesday another group of volunteers headed over to the Food Bank to help sort all of the donations. Caleb Evanter added that, “Food drives make up only a small percentage of what the food banks give out to soup kitchens, so having a food drive adds a lot of work for them. We sorted all the food that we donated, but most groups don't do that." Specific congratulations goes out to the Clark Baseball team who brought the most food for any one car and the Clark Cross Country team who had twice as many volunteers as the next closest team. To sum up the experience, Evanter said that, "There was a lot of positive feedback from the community, the volunteers, and the food bank. The Trick-or-Treating Food Drive will only get bigger next year." And we all hope the same.

CLARK ATHLETES GETS THEIR GREEN ON!
On September 27th, Clark SAAC teamed up with the Clark Sustainability Initiative (CSI) to raise environmental awareness. The day started off with Field Hockey playing at noon, followed by Men’s Soccer at 2:30, and Women’s Soccer at 5pm. The combination of three home games and Family Weekend promised big crowds and enthusiastic fans.
The Campus Engagement Committee within SAAC planned a cookout, tabling by Clark dining services and CSI, as well as a raffle for goodie bags full of Clark Athletic merchandise and sustainable products that were given at the half time of each game. Although the goal of the event was to promote environmentalism, Mother Nature did not seem willing to cooperate. Rainy weather put a damper on activities and made for three very wet games.
However, thanks to the commitment of CSI and SAAC members, not to mention the dedicated fans who braved the weather, the event still managed to happen and was a great success! The groups combined raised over $200 dollars and were able to get the word out to more people about the importance of Going Green!

ATHLETES COME OUT FOR FUN NIGHT
The Kneller Athletic Center was exploding with excitement and high energy on Sunday night as the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted a dodge ball tournament for its annual Athlete Fun Night. Over 75 Clark athletes representing 17 different varsity teams were paired up to compete against one another for the event.
Clark’s SAAC has been planning this event for months and the turnout was phenomenal. Athletic Director Linda Moulton, who has been at Clark for nearly two decades said it was “…probably the best turn-out we’ve had for an athlete’s fun night in a few years.”
Co-director of the event and men’s basketball co-captain, D.J. Brinn added, "Everyone could tell that there was excitement in the air the second you walked into the gym. Teams were forming and players started warming up their arms. Once the games started everybody was involved and cheering. All in all everyone had a great time. It was chaotic, crazy, loud, and most of all fun."
Fun Night concluded with a victory for the Baseball and Softball Team #1 tandem. They defeated Baseball and Softball Team #2 in the championship round.

SAAC TRICK OR TREATS FOR A CAUSE
The Clark University Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) dressed up for a good cause on Halloween last Wednesday. In its third annual “Trick or Treat for Canned Goods” fundraiser, SAAC patrolled the neighborhoods surrounding Worcester State College and Assumption College for canned goodies.
SAAC community engagement co-chairs Julie Parnell ‘08 and Lauren Schiappa ’08 spearheaded the event. Prior to Halloween, Parnell, a softball player, and Schiappa, a member of the women’s rowing team, along with the help of six other committee members, alerted the targeted neighborhoods with the distribution of 400 flyers. Additionally, they spread the word through posters, campus and student digest announcements and word-of-mouth.
Their advertisements did not go unnoticed as 30 student-athletes, clad in Clark University apparel, collected 965 pounds of canned goods. Although the numbers were slightly less than last year’s 1,070 pound effort; for the student-athletes, it was a win-win situation.
All proceeds were donated to the Worcester County Food Bank.
