2006 Men's Recap

The Clark University men’s cross country team finished off its season with a seventh place showing at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship meet.

The Clark men were paced by Thomas McCarthy, who came in 51st in a time of 29:53. Not far behind were Caleb Evanter (57th/30:22) and Dan Roberts (60th/30:24). Stephen Karger (68th/31:03) and John Fredrickson (76th/31:35) rounded out the Cougars’ top finishers.

The team’s best finish came at the Roger Williams Invitational where they placed 2nd of 12 total teams. McCarthy led the way for the Cougar men in the 8k, as he finished ninth with a time of 29:17. The meet marked the third of five races the junior runner finished first for Clark. Teammates Roberts and Evanter followed McCarthy’s pace, coming in at 11th (29:24) and 13th (29:30), respectively. Corey Leonard (42nd/31:18) and Karger (52nd/31:49) completed the point spots for the Clark squad.

Running in his first cross-country race in the Umass Dartmouth Invitational, Evanter paced the Cougar men with a time of 29:22 (120th). In the Worcester City Meet, the Cougar team, who finished 2nd at the event last year, dropped to a fourth place finish, but showcased several top times. McCarthy finished with his season-best time of 28:14 in the 8k race. Roberts reached his best time of the year at 29:06, while Karger ran his best race at 30:47.

The Cougar men’s and women’s cross country teams combined for 10 NEWMAC academic all-conference selections. John Frederickson ’09 (3.80), Stephen Karger ‘07 (4.11), Thomas McCarthy ’08 (3.50), Daniel Roberts ’07 (3.82), and Lee Stone ’09 (3.57) received All-Academic honors for the men’s squad.

2006 Women's Recap

Despite the loss of Clark University women’s cross country ace Emily Tremaine to injury this season, the experienced and solid group of returnees led the Cougars across the trails this fall. In fact, the Clark squad concluded its season by sending seven runners to the NCAA New England Regional Championships held at Veteran’s Golf Course at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass., a trip the Cougars had not made since 2004. Senior Becky Mayer, junior Ellen Durand, sophomore Kaitlyn Sephton, junior Kerri Powers, sophomore Allison Camp, junior Vera Simon-Nobes and sophomore Amanda Haimes represented Clark at the NCAA Regional Meet, placing 21st in the 48-team field. Mayer, who finished first for Clark in all but one race this fall, led the Cougars in the 6k competition. She finished 92nd in a time of 24.35. Durand was 137th (25.48), Sephton took 157th (26.25), Powers placed 191st (27.11), Camp was 201st (27.36), Nobes was 204th (27:45) and Haimes finished 258th (29.14). They were the top pack for the Cougars all this season.

For the second consecutive year, the Cougars placed third at the Worcester City Invitational and ninth at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships. Mayer recorded a season-best fifth place performance (19:55) at the Worcester Meet, while Durand, who finished second in seven of eight races this season, posted a personal-record (20:50) at the Roger Williams Invitational. Sophomore Liz Gomez also shined for the Cougars in a pair of races this fall. She placed third (23:11) at the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational and raced a PR 23:02 at the Western New England College Invite.

In addition to their on the trail accolades, the Cougar cross country teams excelled in the classroom as well. The Clark men’s and women’s cross country teams combined for 10 NEWMAC academic all-conference selections. Allison Camp ’09 (3.79), Rebecca Dash ’09 (3.76), Emily Lescak ‘07 (3.80), Kaitlyn Sephton ’09 (3.64), and Elizabeth Waste ’07 (3.71) made up the women’s cross-country recipients.

2006 Women's Outlook

The Clark University women’s cross country team are fresh off the trails of a successful 2005 season. The Cougars raced their way to a trio of top finishes last fall earning second place in the Roger Williams Invitational and third place performances in the Worcester City and Community College of Rhode Island Meets, not to mention a solid 14th place showing at the ECAC Championships. With a core group of returnees and a few fresh heels to the pack, the Clark squad looks to make a run at the competition and build on last year’s achievements.

With Emily Tremaine out for the season due to injury, the top spot is up for grabs. The senior co-captain, who had three top five performances last fall, will be missed, but Coach Chris D'Aniello expects that senior Becky Mayer, junior Ellen Durand and sophomore Kaitlyn Sephton, will pick up the slack and lead the Cougar pack this fall. Sophomores Amanda Haimes and Allison Camp should also make an impact, while junior Kerri Powers will look to battle for a spot in the top group.

Hampered by injury, co-captain Elizabeth Waste hopes to return at full strength by seasons-end and newcomers Alexandra Casey and Sara Gellar also have the potential to contribute.

If healthy, the coaching staff feels that the Cougars could make a move at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Meet, where they finished a disappointing ninth last fall.

“We need to stay focused and follow through on our goals this year,” said assistant coach Michelle Walmsley. “If we work together, it could be a great season.”

2006 Men's Outlook

After a very successful 2005 season, the Clark University men’s cross country team are looking to hit the ground running this fall. Placing first in the Roger Williams Invitational, the Cougars went on to place fifth out of seven teams at the NEWMAC Championship Meet. The team qualified for the NCAA New England Regional Meet, where they placed an impressive 25th out of 43 total teams. Returning many top runners, and picking a few new faces, the Cougars hope to top their performances in the coming season.

Junior Thomas McCarthy and co-captain Daniel Roberts will battle it out for the team’s top spot, alternating as lead runner for the team in 2005 and finishing 1st and 2nd, respectively, in the 2005 Worcester City Meet. Co-captain Steven Karger, coming off of an injury from the spring, should also be in the mix for top spot if he can remain healthy. Senior Mitchell Paulin, who finished first for the Cougars at the NCAA Regional Meet, and junior Cory Leonard complete the returning participants from the regional tournament.

Maintaining five of the seven top runners, aided by newcomer Caleb Evanter and sophomore Nate Sanders, who is running strong after a great off-season, the Cougars look to take on the top teams at this year’s NEWMAC Championship Meet.

The team’s main concern is to keep their runners injury-free. “You know it’s just going to be a matter of who’s healthy,” says head coach Chris D’Aniello. “It’s great to have that number one guy but it’s those middle runners that really make the difference.”
