Men's & Women's Cross Country
Men's Team Highlights

2008

The Clark University men’s cross country team ran in the right direction under the guidance of first-year head coach Mark Perrone. The Cougars once again capped the year by sending seven runners, including Caleb Evanter, Cory Leonard, Bob Naughton, Patrick O’Neil, Joe McClintock, Lee Stone and Nathaniel Noton-Freeman, to the NCAA Division III Regional Cross Country Championships held at Williams College. In the 8,000 meter run, Evanter had a solid showing with a 128th place finish (28:52.6) out of 331 runners. The senior runner also led Clark in all eight races this fall, garnering Cougar of the Week honors on October 13, and finished his career with a personal best time of 26:43 in the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational’s 8K.

Clark’s highest team finish came in the first meet of the year – the Smith Invitational – where they placed sixth in the 13-team field. They maintained the fourth spot (104 points) in the Worcester City Championship meet for the third straight year, and took seventh at the NEWMAC Championships with 195 points. Evanter paced Clark again with his 33rd place finish (27:12.14).

Evanter and Lee Stone finished off their careers with their fourth NEWMAC All-Academic team award.

2007

The up-and-coming men’s cross country squad made significant strides this season. Relying on just two seniors for leadership, the Cougars improved their standing within the conference with a sixth place finish (174 points) – one position higher than last year – and three top-five team performances. Included in that huddle is a second place showing at the Roger Williams Invitational (RWU), and third at the Western New England College (WNEC) and Community College of Rhode Island Invitationals (CCRI), respectively. Although Clark placed fourth at the Worcester City Championships for the second straight season, they upped their point total by 12 points this fall.

Senior Thomas McCarthy, who topped the team with five first place finishes, paced Clark in a pair of those meets finishing eighth (27:27) at CCRI and ninth (28:36) at WNEC. Additionally, he was the first Cougar to cross the finish line with his 39th place performance (28:03.40) at the NEWMAC meet. Junior Caleb Evanter also picked up a couple of team victories with a 27th place showing (29:34.10) at the Smith Invitational and his time of 29:16 at Roger Williams. Both McCarthy and Evanter represented Clark at the NCAA Division III Regional Cross Country Championships, placing 133rd (27:07.08) and 186th (28:21.5), respectively.

Not only were they performers on the course, but Clark cross country achieved in the classroom as well. Thomas McCarthy ’08, Caleb Evanter ’09 and Lee Stone ‘09 were named to the NEWMAC All-Academic squad.

2006

The Clark University men’s cross country team finished off its season with a seventh place showing at the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship meet.

The Clark men were paced by Thomas McCarthy, who came in 51st in a time of 29:53. Not far behind were Caleb Evanter (57th/30:22) and Dan Roberts (60th/30:24). Stephen Karger (68th/31:03) and John Fredrickson (76th/31:35) rounded out the Cougars’ top finishers.

The team’s best finish came at the Roger Williams Invitational where they placed 2nd of 12 total teams. McCarthy led the way for the Cougar men in the 8k, as he finished ninth with a time of 29:17. The meet marked the third of five races the junior runner finished first for Clark. Teammates Roberts and Evanter followed McCarthy’s pace, coming in at 11th (29:24) and 13th (29:30), respectively. Corey Leonard (42nd/31:18) and Karger (52nd/31:49) completed the point spots for the Clark squad.

Running in his first cross-country race in the Umass Dartmouth Invitational, Evanter paced the Cougar men with a time of 29:22 (120th). In the Worcester City Meet, the Cougar team, who finished 2nd at the event last year, dropped to a fourth place finish, but showcased several top times. McCarthy finished with his season-best time of 28:14 in the 8k race. Roberts reached his best time of the year at 29:06, while Karger ran his best race at 30:47.

The Cougar men’s and women’s cross country teams combined for 10 NEWMAC academic all-conference selections. John Frederickson ’09 (3.80), Stephen Karger ‘07 (4.11), Thomas McCarthy ’08 (3.50), Daniel Roberts ’07 (3.82), and Lee Stone ’09 (3.57) received All-Academic honors for the men’s squad.

Mitchell Paulin ’07 was the top Clark runner at the Worcester City Meet with a time of 31:03 and a 14th place finish.

The Cougars showed their depth as a team with a top five showing at the Tri-State Meet (5th/15). Olsson was Clark’s top runner in 17th place (28:51) and three teammates followed up close behind him out of the field of 146 runners. Roberts was 24th (29:28), Paulin placed 28th (29:38) and Patrick McNamara ’08 finished 33rd (29:58). Olsson’s first-place finish at the Roger Williams Invitational with time of 29:30 (3rd) earned him recognition as the NEWMAC Runner of the Week. Additional top 10 finishers at the invitational included eighth-place finisher, Paulin, with a time of 30:27 and McNamara who finished 10th (30:37). Thomas McCarthy ’08 just missed the top ten with a 30:39 effort, which earned him 11th place.

Roberts led Clark at both the NEWMAC Championships, placing 46th with a time of 28:20, and at the New England Regional race finishing 149th (29:34) at the end of the season. Co-captain Ryan Small ’06 joined teammates Olsson, Paulin and McNamara as one of the top five Cougar finishers at the New England Regional. As a team, Clark placed seventh at the NEWMAC Championship and 30th at the NCAA DIII New England Regional.

Michael Agnelli ’05 improved his times from last season by more than six minutes, a feat that earned him this year’s Most Improved Runner award. Agnelli, a two-sport athlete, has been a four-year coxswain for the men’s crew team, which competes in regattas during the fall season and sprint races in the spring.

2003

The 2003 men’s team had a solid year starting the season with wins over Eastern Connecticut State University and Elms College. Senior captain Jerome Boutaud led the Cougars finishing first with a time of 18:11 against Elms College. The Cougars followed the wins with back-to-back third-place finishes at the Roger Williams University Invitational and Regis College Invitational later in the season. First-year Daniel Roberts was Clark’s top finisher at Roger Williams with a 12th- place finish and a time of 29:41. He also led the team at Regis placing 11th in 29:07. The Cougars finished 10th at the NEWMAC Championship and 19th out of 33 at the ECAC Championship to conclude the season. First-year runners Ryan Olsson and Mitchell Paulin combined with Roberts to make an immediate impact in their first year at Clark. Roberts finished 32nd out of 98 runners (28:31.47) at the NEWMAC Championship, while Olsson finished 46th (29:06.84) and Paulin placed 47th (29:11.23). Boutaud also had a strong NEWMAC Championship finishing in 57th place. Roberts was Clark ’s top runner at the ECAC Championship finishing 73rd out of 236 runners.

2002

Bass placed seventh in the Western New England College race with a time of 31:55 and was the Cougars’ top finisher at the conference championship placing 67th (31:58.09). Boutaud’s best time during the year was 30:57 finishing 20th at the Worcester City Meet. One of Clark’s leaders all season, he did not compete in the conference championship due to an injury. First-year Mike Myers improved dramatically throughout the season and finished as Clarks top runner at the NCAA New England Regionals. He placed 197th out of 268 (29:43).

1999

The 1999 team finished 2-1 in dual meets.

Senior captain Chris Bonelli won the Anna Maria meet and finished seventh in the Worcester City Championship.

1998

The Clark men's team won the Clark Invitational in 1998, beating Assumption and Fitchburg State for the title.
