Women's Highlights
2008
Clark University’s varsity eight boat finished sixth (7:27.68) at the 2008 NEWMAC Women’s Rowing Championships this spring, surpassing last year’s time by just over 25 seconds. Seniors Sarah Brooks and Kate Dorsey were named to the All-Conference varsity team. First-year Kayleigh Boothby earned an All-NEWMAC Novice team selection.
The Cougars’ varsity four posted their best time of the season in their heat at the New England Fours Championships with a third place finish of 7:59.97. They later placed third with a time of 8:00.38 in the petite final.
Brooks, a four-year rower and three-time captain, was recognized with the athletic department’s Alice Higgins Award for academic excellence and athletic achievement by a female athlete. She also joined her teammates Sarah Feinman, Sara Felhaber and Jessica Baker on the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Scholar-Athlete Team and NEWMAC All-Academic squad.
2007
After a slow start, the Clark University women’s rowing team came on strong towards the end. The women used a trio of races, including a regatta, the New Hampshire Championships and the Head of the Charles to prep for a challenging spring season.
The varsity eight placed third out of four boats with a time of 7:47.0 in its opening regatta and went on to claim the 17th spot in the New England Rowing Coaches Poll. Despite high winds and low temperatures, both the varsity eight and varsity four boats participated in its second regatta placing fifth (8:18.6) and third (10:11.6), respectively.
The Cougars’ results showed steady improvement in the next three races. The varsity eight team of coxswain Christina Lyman, Sarah Brooks, Kasia Baca, Sara Fealhaber, Kate Dorsey, Rebecca Smith, Mika Kuwahara, Rachel Godin, and Missy Berger raced to a 7:52.49 finish at the NEWMAC Championships, 7:48.3 at the following regatta, and a 7:25.9 heat, the fastest-time in head coach Erick Thiemke’s four-year tenure, at the New England Rowing Championships - where Clark competed in the third level final with a third place (7:26.6) performance.
The Cougar women’s rowing team led all spring programs with three placed on the All-Academic squad. Sophomores Jessica Baker and juniors Sara Brooks and Sarah Fealhaber earned the honor.
2005
Head women’s crew coach Erick Thiemke (2nd year) directed the women’s
crew program to new highs again this season.. The women's varsity four boat
consisting of Emily Lescak '07, Margy Wilcox '05, Sarah Brooks '08, Ashley Blake
'05 and Meryl Berger '07 finished second in the grand final and second out of
16 boats overall at the 2005 New England Championships. The second-place finish
is the highest achievement by a Clark boat at the New England Championships.
The Cougars earned selection to the ECAC National Championships, which were
cancelled due to weather. Senior captains Wilcox and Blake were named to this
year’s NEWMAC Varsity All-Conference team. Brooks was named to the NEWMAC
Novice All-Conference team.
Clark’s varsity eight boat of Lescak, Wilcox, Brooks, Sara Fealhaber
’08, Berger, Blake, Mika Kuwahara ’07, Katarzyna Kedzia GR and Lauren
Schiappa ’08 finished sixth at the NEWMAC Championships. The same lineup
that kicked off the season with a first place finish (7:18.17) against Fairfield
University, Brandeis University, and Sacred Heart University.
2004
In 2004, head women’s crew coach Erick Thiemke (1st year) directed the
crew program to impressive finishes at both the New England Championships and
the ECAC National Championships. The women’s varsity four boat which included
sophomore coxswain Sara Cannon and rowers: junior Margy Wilcox, junior Ashley
Blake, first-year Meryl Berger and senior Erin Pendleton placed third out of
six boats in the grand final at the New England Championships with a time of
9:32.7. The Cougars finished first out of six in their heat to qualify for the
final. The third-place finish is the highest achievement by a Clark boat at
the New England Championships. At the ECAC National Championships the Cougars
placed sixth in the grand final and 6th out of 17 overall. In addition, the
women claimed the Worcester City Championship varsity four title. The women
finished sixth at the NEWMAC Championships in the varsity eight race and Blake
and Wilcox earned NEWMAC Varsity All-Conference honors while Berger was named
to the NEWMAC Novice All-Conference team.
2003
The 2003 women’s crew team finished sixth in the NEWMAC Championship
under the direction of third-year head coach Jim Looney. Sophomore Ashley Blake
'05 and senior Judith Hogan '03 earned NEWMAC Varsity All-Conference honors
while sophomore Hana Johnson was named to the NEWMAC Novice All-Conference team.
2002
The varsity four boat placed second at the New Hampshire Championships in the
fall of 2002. The boat finished with a time of 18:49.44
Erin Pendleton '04 and Judith Hogan '03 were named to the NEWMAC Varsity All-Conference
team in 2002. In addition, Ashley Blake '05 was named to the novice all-conference
team. The women's novice four finished fourth out of 18 boats at the NE Fours
Championship.
2001
In 2001, Chris Zakrzewski '01 and Rachel Regeczi '03 were named to the NEWMAC
varsity All-Conference Team. Stephanie Roy '04 received novice all-conference honors.
2000
The 2000 NEWMAC All-Conference Team included varsity selections, Kelly
McCarthy '00 and Ellen Anderson '00, and novice selection Judith Hogan '03.
1999
Clark had three women who were named to the 1999 NEWMAC All-Conference Team. Dara Glass '01
and Kelly McCarthy '00 were varsity all-conference and Bethany Saunders '02 was novice all-conference.
1997
In 1997 three women were selected to the NEW 8 All-Conference Team, Kelly
McCarthy '00, Mary Alice Moran '98 and Anna Noble '98.
The women's eight boat placed fifth of 31 at the Head of the Connecticut in
the fall of 1997. Clark's 1997 women's varsity four made it to the finals
of the New England Fours Championship in the spring.
Clark's women's varsity four defended the Worcester City Championship, edging
out Assumption in the final strokes.
1996
In 1996 the rowing teams dedicated a new varsity eight shell, which was
purchased with money from the squad's fundraising efforts. Christened Miss
Scarlet 1995, the boat was named for Clark's main athletic color with the
year that the majority of the fundraising took place.
1995
In 1995 the women's varsity four won the Worcester Regatta edging out Holy
Cross. The women's novice eight also placed first at the Worcester Regatta. The heavy
weight four placed third at the Dad's Vail and the novice eight placed first at the
New Hampshire race. The women's varsity four completed the season making it to the finals
at the New England Fours Championship.
1993
The 1993 fall season saw the women's novice eight win the Textile River
Regatta in Lowell, MA.
1989
Clark has been successful at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in
