WORCESTER, MASS. 09/23/06 The Clark University womens cross-country team placed third for the second consecutive year, while the mens team finished fourth at the Worcester City Invitational hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute at Institute Park on Saturday afternoon.
Becky Mayer (Arvado, Colo.) crossed the finish line first for the Clark women. She came in fifth with a time of 19:55. Ellen Durand (Billerica, Mass.) was the Cougars second finisher, placing eighth (20:55). Kaitlyn Sephton (Shutesbury, Mass.) placed ninth (21:07), Vera Simon-Nobles took 19th (22:38) and Kerry Powers (Juneau, Ark.) was 22nd (22:53) to round out Clarks top finishers.
WPIs Megan Murphy took first for the women with a time of 19:20. Clark finished with 61 points.
After placing second in last years Worcester City meet, the Clark men dropped to fourth. Thomas McCarthy (Scarborough, Me.) had a strong showing for the Cougars with an eighth place finish (28:14). Other top finishers included: Daniel Roberts (Portland, Me.) (17th/29:06), Caleb Evanter (Marblehead, Mass.) (21st/29:40), Stephen Karger (Stamford, Conn.) (31st/30:47), and Cory Leonard (Arlington, Mass.) (41st/31:55).
Alex White (26:29), from WPI, finished first for the men. WPI men and women captured the championships with 35 points and 26 points, respectively. The Cougars totaled 91 points.
The Cougars return to the trails on Sat., Sept. 30 when they travel to the Mount Holyoke Invitational.
