Eastern Connecticut Eases Past Women's Basketball
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - Nicky Morey (Columbia/Windham HS) tossed in a season-high 25 points and the Eastern Connecticut State University womens basketball team limited Clark University to 18 per cent shooting in the first half in running its season-opening winning streak to nine with a 62-38 non-conference victory Tuesday evening at Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium.
The loss is the fifth straight for Clark (3-5), which has dropped its last eight to Eastern in this series.
A junior guard, Morey scored 18 of her points in the first half, when Eastern built a lead of as many a 12 points before settling for a nine-point edge at the break.
Clark was held to just 18.2 per cent shooting from the floor in the first half and finished at 21.0. Against Eastern this year, eight of nine opponents have shot less than 40 per cent, and none have scored as many as 60 points.
Last years Little East Conference leader in field goal percentage, junior Ashley McFetridge (Canton) added 17 points for Eastern, sinking seven of nine field goals to push her season percentage over .500 to .521.
Senior Stephanie Smith (Penacook, NH) and freshman Jessica Moriarty (East Haven) each tied their career-high with nine rebounds. Moriarty had five of her rebounds in a five-minute span in the second half.
Clark junior forward Sarah Roderigue, who had 27 points and five rebounds against Eastern a year ago, finished with a team-high nine points and eight rebounds this time. She was 3-for-14 from the floor.
Clark is off until they travel to the University of Southern Maine tournament January 4-5.
