Women's Basketball Falls to Trinity College in OT
WORCESTER, MASS. 12/08/07 - Sophomore guard Claire Arnstein (Hicksville, N.Y.) had a game-high 24 points, including the second half buzzer-beater hoop, to lead Trinity College to a 71-65 overtime victory over Clark University in womens basketball action on Saturday at the Kneller Athletic Center.
Junior Sarah Roderigue (Oakland, Me.) had a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds to lead Clark. Sophomore Jillian Camilleri (Lancaster, Mass.) added 18 points and junior Sara Hagstrom (Yarmouth, Me.) finished with a season-high 12 points.
Clark led by seven (58-51) after Hagstrom, who finished with six assists, found Camilleri underneath for a quick lay-in with 2:13 remaining in regulation. The Bantams then went to work chipping away at the lead with a pair of baskets from Tess Donie (Worcester, Mass.) and Arnstein, respectively, for a three point deficit (55-58). Jessica Sims (Peabody, Mass.) made good on one-of-two shots at the line to bring the Bantams within two (56-58) with 12 seconds on the clock. Clark had a chance to increase its lead, but Hagstrom missed the front end of a one-and-one. Trinity raced down the court, where Arnsteins open lay-up tied it 58-all as time expired.
In the overtime period, Jess Lamothe (Westboro, Mass.) hit two free throws giving the Cougars its final lead of the day (60-59) with 3:28 left to play. Donie and Arnstein nailed a pair of three-pointers for a 65-61 Trinity advantage, but Clark went on a 4-0 spurt capped by Roderigues basket to make it 65-all with 1:44 on the clock. The Bantams scored the final six points of the game, including four from Donie, to secure their overtime victory.
The first 10 minutes of the game was a back and forth battle between the two teams with neither leading by more than four points. Clark snapped the trend with an 11-0 run highlighted by back-to-back baskets from Hannah Lacaire, including a baseline three for a 24-18 lead at the 5:20 mark.
Both teams went scoreless over the next 3:20 until Arnsteins jumper cut the deficit to within four (20-24). The Cougars outscored Trinity 8-2 over the final 2:50 of the half to take a 10-point halftime advantage (32-22).
Devon Kearns (Glastonbury, Conn.) added 13 points, while Christine Card (Waterbury, Conn.) finished with 10 rebounds for Trinity (6-1).
Clark, which held a 50-40 margin on the glass, committed 23 turnovers to Trinitys 13.
