Amherst Upends Women's Basketball
WORCESTER, MASS. 12/05/07 - The Clark University womens basketball team dropped its third straight game with a 78-54 loss to Amherst College on Wednesday night at the Kneller Athletic Center.
Junior Sarah Roderigue (Oakland, Me.) led Clark (3-3) with 19 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore Jillian Camilleri (Lancaster, Mass.) finished with 16 points.
Amherst pulled away from the Cougars early in the first half. After a basket from sophomore Ruth Briggs (Sanford, Me.) gave the hosts their largest lead of the game (12-8), Amherst rattled off 19 straight points to take a 25-12 advantage with 6:37 remaining and closed the half up by 12 (33-12).
Clark opened the second half on an 8-4 burst, highlighted by six points from Roderigue, to pull within eight (29-37). However, Amherst outscored the Cougars 10-2 over the next 2:18 to extend its lead to 15 (46-31) and never looked back.
Sophomore Samantha Swensen (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) led all scorers with 25 points for Amherst, which remains undefeated at 7-0. Senior Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, Ill.) added 14 points and four steals.
Clark, which were edged on the boards (39-34), shot just 32.1 percent (18-56) compared to Amhersts 50.9 percent (28-55).
Clark will host Trinity College on Saturday (1 p.m.).
