Women's Basketball Suffers First Loss of Season
NEW LONDON, Conn. - Clark University suffered its first loss of the season with a 60-53 defeat to Connecticut College in non-conference womens basketball action at Luce Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.
Cindy Roseen (Wolfeboro, N.H.) poured in 16 points and hauled in 12 rebounds off the bench to lead Connecticut College (3-1). Katy Serafin (Carmel, N.Y) chipped in with 14 points and nine boards and is now just 15 points away from reaching the 1,000 point barrier. Lindsay Michel (West Haven, Conn.) added nine points, seven rebounds, three blocks, three assists and two steals for the hosts.
It was Conn. Colleges first victory against Clark (3-1) in seven years.
Junior forward Sarah Roderigue (Oakland, Maine) dumped in a game-high 20 points, grabbing six rebounds and dishing out four assists for the Cougars. Jillian Camilleri (Lancaster, Mass.) posted a double double with 15 points and 10 boards for Clark. Sara Hagstrom (Yarmouth, Maine) contributed 10 points for the Cougars.
Clark opened the game with a furious 9-0 run over a span of 4:22. The visitors took a 17-7 lead with 11:51 remaining after Camilleri drained a free throw. But midway through the half, the Camels reeled off a 16-to-2 run, building a 23-19 lead with 5:58 to go. Roseen keyed the rally with seven points.
Jacquelyn DeFeo (Stratford, Conn.) provided a spark with some solid backcourt play, feeding Roseen on the post and finishing with a game-high five assists. The Camels ended the half with a 7-0 run. Maegan Hoover (West Newton, Mass.) canned a triple from the left wing and Roseen added another field goal in the closing moments that made it a 31-24 game at the break.
The Cougars battled back and pulled to within four in the latter stages of the second half. Sara Hagstrom (Yarmouth, Maine) buried a three with 2:02 remaining and the Camel lead was cut to four, 55-51. On the ensuing possession, Roseen put in a lay-up on a feed from DeFeo that pushed the lead back to six, 57-51. The Cougars could not get any closer and the Camels were able to hold on for the 60-53 triumph.
Clark will travel to Salem State College on Saturday (1 p.m.).
