Cross Country Competes at NEWMAC Championships

NORTHAMPTON, MASS. 10/27/07 - The Clark University cross country teams competed at the 2007 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships hosted by Smith College in Northampton, Mass., on Saturday morning.

The Cougar men placed sixth in the seven-team field with 174 points, while the women took eighth out of 10 teams with 204 points. Both the MIT men and women captured the NEWMAC title.

Graduate student Emily Tremaine was the only Clark runner to earn All-Conference honors with her sixth place finish on the rainy 5k course. The Spokane, Wash., native finished in a time of 19:48.80. Teammate Mary Martin (Auburn, Me.) was the second Cougar to cross the finish line with her 39th place finish (21:10.20). Junior Kaitlyn Sephton (Shutesbury, Mass.) was 72nd (22:33.00) and senior Kerriann Powers (Juneau, Ak.) was right behind in 74th (22:36.40), while senior Jenna Glazer placed 82nd (22:57.30) to round out Clark’s top finishers.

Smith’s Nora Youngs (Penacook, N.H.) earned Runner of the Year honors as the individual winner with a time of 19:09.80.

On the men’s side, senior Thomas McCarthy (Scarborough, Me.) paced the Cougars with his 39th place (28:03.40) finish on the 8k course. Junior Caleb Evanter (Marblehead, Mass.) took 42nd (28:10.10), first-year Martin Leggett (Bangor, Pa.) was 59th (29:11.60), Robert Naughton placed 79th (30:37.30), and junior John Frederickson (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.) and first-year Thomas Brescia finished 90th (31:20.80) and 93rd (31:32.70), respectively.

MIT junior Jake Ruzevick (Coronado, Cali.) was named Runner of the Year after his first place individual effort in a time of 25:58.10.

Clark will send runners to the ECAC Championships at Williams College next Saturday.
