Women's Cross Country Wins WNEC Invitational
SPRINGFIELD, MASS. 10/13/07 - The Clark University womens cross country team ran away with its third team championship this season with a first place finish at the Western New England College Invitational on Saturday morning. The Cougar women topped the twelve-team field with 57 points. The Clark men placed third overall.
Although WNECs own Kaylee Martin crossed the finish line first (19:54), Clark had three runners place in the top-10 to claim the overall title. Graduate student Emily Tremaine (Spokane, Wash.) took second place on the 5K course with a time of 20:01. Fellow Cougars sophomore Mary Martin (Auburn, ME) and junior Ellen Durand (Billerica, MA) finished 6th (20:53) and 10th (21:35) place respectively. Junior Kaitlyn Sephton (Shutesbury, Mass.) was 13th (21:51) and senior Kerri Powers (Juneau, Ak.) finished 28th (22:44) to round out Clarks top finishers.
The Clark mens team had a strong performance totaling 126 points for third out of 10 teams. Senior Thomas McCarthy (Scarborough, Me.) led the Cougars with a ninth place finish (28:36) on the 8K course. Other top finishers for the men included, Caleb Evanter (Marblehead, Mass.) (13th/29:12), Martin Leggett (Bangor, Pa.) (32nd/30:15), Bob Naughton (Holliston, Mass.) (34th/30:18), and John Frederickson (Chestnut Ridge, N.Y.) (57th/31:48).
WPI captured the overall title with 28 points.
The Clark teams will compete in the NEWMAC Championships at Smith College on Saturday, Oct. 27.
