Men's Soccer Ties Up Anna Maria

PAXTON, MASS. 10/08/07 - Senior Marc Labbe (Waterville, Me.) notched the game- tying marker with 10 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Clark University men’s soccer team a 1-1 draw against Anna Maria College in non-conference action on Monday afternoon.

Breaking a school record for ties in a season, Clark moves to 4-3-5 overall. The Amcats, who have never beaten Clark, improve to 4-7-2

The hosts scored early when freshman Ara Derderian (Worcester, MA) hit a brilliant free kick from just outside the box into the far corner ten minutes into the contest.

Clark shook off the early set back and definitely had the better of the play for the rest of the half, leading in shots (9-4) and corner kicks (4-2). Senior Lino Goncalves (Newton, MA) kept the Cougars in the game, recording four shots before the break, two of them on net. However, each bid was turned away by AmCat junior keeper Scott Burokas (Auburn, MA).

The Amcats had an opportunity to put the game away in the 86th minute but sophomore Matthew McKillop (Woburn, MA) hit the cross bar from eight yards out. Just two minutes later, Labbe willed himself to score the equalizer. He recovered a tipped ball deep in Anna Maria’s zone, beat three Amcat defenders at the eighteen and blasted a shot to the low corner just out of the diving reach of Burokas. It was his team-leading eighth goal of the season.

Both teams had chances in the two OT periods, but none found the back of the net.

Wise finished with four saves for Clark. Burokas was steady in goal stopping 11 shots.

Clark outshot Anna Maria, 24-11, in the game, and held a 10-5 margin in corner kicks.

Clark returns to conference play with a trip to Coast Guard Academy on Friday (7 p.m.).
