Field Hockey Blanked by Nationally Ranked Springfield College
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (September 29, 2007) - The Clark University field hockey team dropped a 6-0 decision to nationally ranked Springfield College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon at the Prides Stagg Field.
Clark falls to 4-4 and 0-1 in its NEWMAC opener. With the win, Springfield, ranked #17 in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III poll, is now 8-2, 1-1 in conference play on the season.
Meg Bradley (Cumberland, R.I.) opened up the scoring for the Pride at the 28:10 mark when she finished a feed from Brittany Veazie (Dexter, Maine) to give the home squad a 1-0 advantage. Jane Kelleher (Chatham, Mass.) tacked on an unassisted tally with 15:58 remaining before Jill Urtz (Verona, N.Y.) hammered home a penalty stroke to give the Pride a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
Kelleher tallied her second goal of the game just under three minutes into the second stanza off a feed from Becca Gamble (Granby, Conn.) before Bradley would tack on her second tally just minutes later. Allie Baier (Farmington, Conn.) rounded out the scoring for the Pride when she found the back off the cage after a scramble in front of the goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kathryn Dawsey (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) turned aside a career-high 20 shots for Clark. The Springfield defense held Clark without a shot in the entire match as Emma Kaplan (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Julia Kincade (Durham, N.H) combined for the shutout.
Clark will travel to NEWMAC foe Wellesley College on Tuesday (4 p.m.).
