Women's Cross Country Capture CCRI Invitational; Men Place Third
LINCOLN, R.I. 09/29/07 - Graduate student Emily Tremaine (Spokane, Wash.) won her second straight race and the Clark University womens cross country team won the Community College of Rhode Island Tri-State Invitational on Saturday. The Cougar men placed third in the event.
The Clark women placed first in the four-team field with 36 points. WPI finished second.
Not only did Tremaine capture the womens title, but she also set a new 5K course record in a time of 19:36. Sophomore Mary Martin and senior Ellen Durand finished seconds apart, placing fourth in a time of 21:09 and fifth at 21:12, respectively, to round out the top-five overall finishers. Junior Kaitlyn Sephton (Shutesbury, Mass.) took 11th (22:16) and junior Kerriann Powers (Juneau, Ak.) was 15th (22:29) for Clark.
On the mens side, the Worcester teams came in 1-2-3. WPI finished first, Worcester State took second and Clark was third (69 points) out of eight teams.
Senior Thomas McCarthy (Scarborough, Me.) finished eighth (27:27) to pace Clark. Other top finishers for the Cougars included, Caleb Evanter (Marblehead, Mass.) (18th/29:00), Martin Leggett (Bangor, Pa.) (19th/29:06), Bob Naughton (Holliston, Mass.) (29th/30:35), and Thomas Brescin (43rd/32:17).
Clark will compete at the Roger Williams Invitational next Saturday.
