Blake Leads Field Hockey Past Wheelock College, 7-1

WORCESTER, MASS. 09/27/07 - Lauren Blake (Oakland, Me.) had three goals and an assist to lead the Clark University field hockey team to a 7-1 non-conference victory over Wheelock College at Granger Field on Thursday evening.

Carley Corkum (Newbury, Mass.), Gloria Torres (West Hartford, Conn.), Sasha Burgess (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Madeleine Henefield (Pelham, Mass.) each tallied single goals for the Cougars. Both defenders, Torres and Corkum notched their first goals of the season.

Clark (4-3) opened the scoring early as Blake found the back of the cage off an assist from Lauren DeMetro (Summit, N.J.) just over four minutes into the game. Following a nice crossing pass from Henefield, Corkum fired a shot past Wheelock keeper Lauren Tavares (Burlington, Mass.) to add to the Cougar lead (2-0) at 13:58.

Clark had a chance to go into the intermission with a 3-0 edge, but Chelsea Proulx’s (Franklin, N.H.) close range shot bounced off Tavares’ pads.

The Cougars kept up the offensive pressure in the second half. Blake scored a pair of goals within a four minute span to take a 4-0 lead. The sophomore forward redirected a pass from DeMetro into an open area of the cage at 36:36 and scored her third goal of the night off a feed from Burgess at 39:07. She leads the team in scoring with 12 goals and three assists.

Torres and Burgess scored minutes apart for a 6-0 Clark advantage, but Wheelock prevented the shutout when Jill Chaffee (Bridgewater, Mass.) broke through for an unassisted tally at 57:22. Henefield capped off the offensive attack when she converted a feed from Precious Ra’Akbar (Baltimore, Md.) at 64:18.

Kathryn Dawsey (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) had two saves in goal for Clark before giving way to Katelynn McGrath (Wilmington, Mass.), who was untested. Tavares had a busy day in goal with 16 stops for Wheelock (2-5).

Clark will open its NEWMAC schedule when it travels to Springfield College on Saturday (1 p.m.). -30-
