Men's Soccer Notches Fourth Double-OT Draw; Ties Rhode Island College 1-1
Providence, RI. - The Clark University mens soccer team notched their fourth double-overtime tie of the season with a 1-1 draw against Rhode Island College in non-conference action on Wednesday evening.
The Anchormen concluded a four-game home stand with a 2-0-2 mark as they are now 5-3-2 on the season. Clark, which played to its fourth tie in the last six contests, is now 2-2-4 overall marking the most ties since the 1986-87 campaign (13-3-4).
The Cougars got on the board in the 35th minute as sophomore midfielder Tom Ashley (Boulder, CO) broke down the right wing and fired a shot across the box, which deflected off RIC senior defender James Nigrelli (Ashaway,RI) and into the net for an own-goal.
The Anchormen evened the game up, 1-1, in the 52nd minute as freshman defender Joe Sousa (Cumberland, RI) fired a free kick from 30 yards out that was redirected by sophomore midfielder Ryan Kelley (Hope, RI) for his team-leading sixth goal of the season. It was Sousa¹s first career assist and point.
RIC had several quality chances to win the game as junior midfielder Brandon Migliore (Coventry, RI) and senior forward Derek Rocha (Fall River,MA) hit the crossbar and post, respectivel,y in the second half and overtime.
RIC outshot its opponent, 25-13 in the game, but both teams were even in corner kicks with six apiece.
Senior goalkeeper Jadon Neves (Warren, RI) made five saves for RIC. Clark junior goalkeeper Peter Wise (Providence, RI) made seven stops - six in the second half - to move to 2-2-4.
Clark will return to NEWMAC action on Saturday against cross-town rival WPI at 1:30 p.m. at Granger Field. Rhode Island College will play at Little East Conference rival Western Connecticut on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 6 p.m.
