Women's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to Springfield College, 1-0

SPRINGFIELD, MASS. 09/22/07 - The Clark University women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to Springfield College in their New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener in Springfield, Mass. on Saturday night.

Maria Evans’ (Gloucester, Mass.) goal with just 1:36 left in regulation lifted the Pride to the victory.

"We had a couple of chances and defended hard the entire game," said head coach Joe Brady. "They eventually scored on a goal that was unlucky on our part. It was a tough way to lose, but we’ll bounce back."

With time winding down in the match, Delany Cantrall (Santa Paula, Calif.) sent a long, lofted ball into the box from 40 yards out. Nicole Hanewich (Cumberland, R.I.) settled the bouncing ball, and with her back to the goal attemped a bicycle kick. Her shot ricocheted off the cross bar and stayed in play. Evans ran onto the loose ball and slammed home the game-winning goal.

It was Hanewich’s second-consecutive game where she has recorded the assist on the game-winning tally.

The Pride dominated the match throughout, owning a 23-3 shot advantage. Sue Jenney (Agawam, Mass.) needed to make just three saves to record her fifth shutout of the season. Sophomore Joanna Clark made nine saves in goal for Clark.

With the win, the Pride improve to 7-1, 1-0 in conference play while the Cougars drop to 3-2-1, 0-1.

Clark will host Keene State College on Wednesday (6:30 p.m.). Springfield returns to action when it hosts Rhode Island College on Tuesday evening (7 p.m.).
