Men's Soccer Unbeaten Stretch Spoiled with 3-0 Loss to Babson College

BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Clark University men’s soccer team had its four-game unbeaten streak spoiled with a 3-0 loss to Babson College in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Hartwell-Rogers Field on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Tim Winn (Sutton, Mass.) scored two more goals and sophomore Daniel Fogarty (Brookline, N.H.) added another to lead the Beavers. With the win, Babson, ranked sixth in New England, improved to 6-1-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while Clark dipped to 2-2-3 overall and 0-1-1 in the NEWMAC.

It was a very evenly played first half, with Babson holding a slim 5-4 advantage in shots, 3-2 edge in saves, and neither team earning a corner kick. However, Clark played a man-down going into the second half after John Machado (Bristol, Conn.) took a red card in the 45th minute.

"The first half was evenly played, with us having the only real chance to score," said head coach David Kulik. "But giving up an early goal and playing short in the second half, changed the flow of the game completely."

After a scoreless first half, Fogarty put Babson on the board just over four minutes into the second when he netted the first goal of his collegiate career off a cross from senior Jonny Hakala (New Ipswich, N.H.). Winn then made it 2-0 when he converted a feed from senior Justin Unger (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) out of a crowd in front at 73:07, and the junior All-American tacked on his second of the game and league-leading ninth of the season off a cross from Fogarty at 82:30 to cap off the 3-0 victory.

Senior captain Chris Necklas (Guilford, Conn.) recorded four saves in net for Babson to earn his third consecutive shutout and extend his scoreless minutes streak to 234. He now has five shutouts this season and 38 in his career.

Junior Peter Wise (Providence, R.I.) went the distance in net for Clark, finishing with seven saves.

Clark returns to action on Wednesday (6 p.m.) when it travels to Rhode Island College for a non-conference game.
