Volleyball Snaps Losing Skid; Sweeps Mitchell College, 3-0
WORCESTER, MASS. 09/22/07 - The Clark University womens volleyball team snapped a six-game losing skid with a 3-0 sweep of Mitchell College in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Kneller Athletic Center. Game scores were 30-19, 30-10, 30-13.
Clark, which never trailed throughout the day, improves to 3-7 overall. Mitchell drops to 1-12.
In the opener, the Cougars gained a sizeable lead, but Mitchell chipped away to bring the game within two (10-12). Clark widened the gap on a kill by sophomore outside hitter Emily Visone (West Hempstead, N.Y.) and senior middle blocker Sarah Hunsuckers (Orinda, Cali.) service ace to lead by eight (21-13) and eventually pulled away for a 30-19 victory.
The Cougars opened game two on an 8-1 run on service points from junior middle blocker Pam Taylor (New Providence, N.J.) and sophomore setter Kylie Kutney (Commerce, Mich.). Mitchell answered with a block from sophomore Sarah Senetcen (Terryville, Conn.) and first-year Stephanie Davis (Ledyard, Conn.) to trail 6-10, but Clark went on a 4-0 spurt capped by Taylors solo-block for a 14-6 edge. Clark went on to win the game, 30-10.
In the final game, Clark held a 27-12 advantage. Mitchell cut the deficit to 14 points (13-27) on a hard spike from Davis, but would get no closer. Clark cruised to the 30-13 victory.
Hunsucker led the way for the Cougars with 11 kills, seven digs, and two blocks. Liz Magier (Newburgh, N.Y.) had six kills and two service aces, while Visone chipped in with 12 digs. Taylor finished with four aces and two blocks on the day.
Davis led Mitchell with four kills, five digs and two aces. Sophomore Heather-Renae Powers (Niantic, Conn.) added two kills, two blocks, and two digs.
Clark will travel to WPI on Tuesday (7 p.m.) for a key NEWMAC match. Mitchell is off until next Saturday when they will host WPI in a non-conference match at 1 p.m.
