Women's Soccer shutout by nationally ranked Union College
WORCESTER, MASS. 9/18/2007 - The Clark University womens soccer team fell to nationally ranked Union College in a non-conference bout at Granger Field on Tuesday night.
The loss snaps a three-game unbeaten streak as the Cougars draws even at 3-3-1, while Union continues its undefeated record of 7-0.
The Cougars found themselves down early in the match as Allison Cuozzo (Norfolk, Mass.) scored with a header off a corner kick from Chelsea Hargis (East Lyme, Conn.) just 1:24 minutes into the game.
Clark had a chance for the tying mark when Liz Adamcik (Florence, Mass.) broke through the defense and skirted Union keeper Melissa McDonald (Lynnfield, Mass.), but her shot sailed wide right.
The Dutchwoman kept up an offensive push, earning seven corner kicks to Clarks one. A stalwart Cougar defense kept Union from finding the net again, however. Another corner from Hargis with less than 15 in the half bent towards the goal, but Megan ORourke (Somerset, Mass.) was there to send it out.
Clark would enter the break down 1-0.
When play resumed Clark controlled the ball most of the half in search of the equalizer, placing a total of nine shots on goal, but were unable to find the back of the net. Their best chance came when Kerri Moy (Newton, Mass.) crossed a ball to Kristen Murrone (Middletown, Conn.), but her bid just missed the top corner of the goal.
Despite limiting the Union offense to just four shots in the half, the Cougars found themselves down another score following a goal from Caitlin Cuozzo (Norfolk, Mass.). Megan Bordino (New Paltz, N.Y.) delivered the ball to Cuozzo inside the box and a quick turn sent the ball home at 71:33. Clark was unable to respond and the game ended 2-0 Union.
The Dutchwomen held a slim advantage in shots on goal (13-12). The shutout for Union marked its sixth in seven games played this season.
Clark begins division play on Saturday, traveling to New England Womens and Mens Athletic Conference rival Springfield College (7 pm), while Union faces their first Liberty League opponent William Smith College on Friday (4 pm).
