Women's Soccer Topples Rhode Island College, 3-1
WORCESTER, MASS. 9/8/2007 -- Three different scorers lead the Clark University womens soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Rhode Island College in a non-conference match-up at Granger Field for the Cougar Pride Fall Kickoff on Saturday.
Jen Dineen (Groveland, Mass.), Liz Adamcik (Florence, Mass.) and Amanda Ramos (Williston Park, N.Y.) all netted goals for the Cougars in the win.
With the victory, Clark moves to 2-2 while RIC falls to 1-2-1.
Play was even matched in the first half as both teams placed seven shots on goal. The Anchorwomen struck first in the game as Krista MacKinnon (Exeter, R.I.) took the ball off a corner and lofted it to Jessica Cardinal (Harrisville, R.I.), who headed the ball for the score in the seventh minute. Cardinal nearly had a second goal on a bid from inside the 18, but Cougar keeper Joanna Clark (Windham, Maine) made the stop to preserve the one-goal deficit.
Clark maintained heavy pressure on net but could not find the goal until Dineen rocketed a ball from 25 yards out to the far post for the equalizer with just five seconds left in the half.
The half ended in a stalemate, 1-1.
In the second stanza the Cougars took their first lead of the game when Adamcik took a ball from Lauren King (Piscataway, N.J.) in front of the net and crossed to the far corner for the go-ahead goal (2-1, 56:50).
Rhode Island had a chance for the tie on a breakaway shot from Lindsay Laurie (Warwick, R.I.), but Clark made a diving stop to send the ball off the goal post, preserving the lead.
Clark found the net again late in the game when a free kick bounced off the goalies hands to Ramos, who tapped it in to put the Cougars up by two (3-1) with just over three minutes remaining.
The Cougars out shot the Anchorwomen 17-11 in the bout and held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Clark hosts Connecticut College on Tuesday (6 p.m.) while Rhode Island returns home to face the United States Coast Guard Academy the same day (4 p.m.).
