Blake Powers Field Hockey past Becker, 4-1

WORCESTER, MASS. 09/01/07 -- Sophomore forward Lauren Blake (Oakland, Me.) had two goals and two assists to lead the Clark University field hockey team to 4-1 non-conference victory over Becker College in its season opener at Granger Field on Saturday.

Sophomore Chelsea Proulx (Franklin, N.H.) also scored two goals for Clark.

Clark (1-0) opened the scoring just 2:25 into the game. Blake punched in her first goal of the day off a pass from senior Katherine Willis (Lincoln, R.I.) for a 1-0 advantage. The Cougars had a chance to extend their lead after an infraction was called in the circle, but Becker goalie Ciara Lawrence (Costa Mesa, Cali.) got a hand on Madeleine Henefield’s (Pelham, Mass.) penalty stroke at the 17:54 mark.

Clark made it a 2-0 game when Proulx scored her first goal of the day. After taking a penalty corner, Proulx positioned herself in front of the cage and tapped it past Lawrence with 9:55 remaining in the first half. Blake was credited with an assist on the play.

Becker got on the board when first-year forward Tammy Mullen (Pottstown, Pa.) found Cougar goalie Kathryn Dawsey (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) out of position at 46:10.

The Cougars answered with a pair of goals within a four and a half minute span. Proulx scored on a breakaway pass from Blake at 60:36 and Blake found the back of the cage just 4:21 later.

Clark held a 28-4 advantage in shots and a 10-6 edge in penalty corners.

Making her collegiate debut, Dawsey finished with three saves for Clark. Lawrence had a strong day in goal with 13 saves for Becker.

Clark will host Nichols College on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Becker will entertain Regis College that same day at 4 p.m.
