Volleyball: Cougars Drop A Pair At CCNY Tournament

New York, N.Y. - The Clark University volleyball squad dropped a pair of matches to two teams from California on Friday at the City College of New York Tournament.

In the first match, the Cougars raced out to a 2-0 lead before Whittier College got the come from behind win, in a thrilling five-set set match. The Poets were led offensively by junior outside hitter, Aya Nakano, and senior outside hitter, Natalie Barajas, whom had 20 kills (match-high) and 13 kills respectively. Nakano also added 16 digs and three aces, while Barajas added four aces and seven digs.

Junior setter, Vanessa Amran, distributed 46 assists and added five digs and five total blocks. On the defensive end sophomore libero, Justine Martinez came up with 17 digs.

For the Cougars, sophomore middle blocker, Kristin McGinty (Vail, Colo.), contributed to her team's effort with 15 kills and four total blocks. Sophomore outside hitter, Amira Tranchell (Falmouth, Mass.), tallied 13 kills and three total blocks. Freshman setter, Emily Sullivan (Nashua, N.H.), distributed 27 assists and classmate Amanda Harris (San Diego, Calif.), had a match high 19 digs.

In Clark's second match, Stockton defeated the Cougars, 3-0. The Eagles were once led by sophomore outside hitter, Christine Velott who had a match high 12 kills while also contributing nine digs.

For the Cougars, McGinty contributed to her team's effort with five kills, one solo block and three digs, while Sullivan distributed seven assists.

The Cougars play two more matches on Saturday, the first against Mount Aloysius and the second against tournament host, CCNY.
