Women's Soccer: Mount Holyoke Stuns Cougars, 1-0
Worcester, Mass. - Mount Holyoke senior Perry Markell (Portsmouth, R.I.) snapped a scoreless tie late in the second half to catapult the visiting Lyons to a stunning 1-0 win over host Clark in NEWMAC women's soccer action on Granger Field on Tuesday evening.
Markell's goal came off of a pass from classmate Jesse Sugrue (Belchertown, Mass.), who found Markell open on the right side of the box and she floated a shot up over Cougar netminder Joanna Clark (Windham, Maine) for the game's lone goal at the 74:17 mark.
The loss snaps Clark's seven-match unbeaten streak and deals the Cougars their first loss in league play. Markell's goal also ended Joanna Clark's shutout streak, which had reached 638:19 and stretched over parts of eight games.
The Cougars held an 11-6 edge in shots but Mount Holyoke goalkeeper Ingo Magnusdottir turned back ten shots to help the Lyons improve to 3-11 overall, 2-5 in league play.
Clark, who entered the contest ranked ninth in the region in the most recent NSCAA poll, falls from first to third place in the NEWMAC standings at 8-5-2 overall and 4-1-2 in conference action.
The Cougars will face one of the teams above them in the NEWMAC standings in their next outing - Saturday at Wellesley, while the Lyons square off with MIT.
